Hughes Launch Enterprise-Level Security for Small Businesses
In a move that could significantly bolster the digital defences of small enterprises, Hughes Network Systems has unveiled a new cybersecurity package tailored for small businesses.
This development comes at a crucial time when the threat landscape is at its worst in years.
Cyber threats are increasingly targeting smaller organisations, according to the EchoStar subsidiary.
Yet a Zero Trust access provider StrongDM study showed that 59% of small business owners with no cybersecurity measures in place believe their business is too small to be attacked.
The steaks for small businesses
Shopify estimates that up to 99.7% of all US companies - 28 million in all - can be classified as small businesses.
Although the name may lead you to believe it is some mom and pop shop, the US Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small business as one that employs fewer than 1,500 people and generates a maximum annual revenue of US$41.5m.
With such revenue being generated, these companies represent a lucrative target for hackers.
“With 46% of all cyber breaches impacting businesses with fewer than 1,000 employees, it is important that small businesses protect themselves," said Dan Rasmussen, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Division, Hughes.
Small businesses that do want to invest in security may be cost out of best-in-class cybersecurity systems aimed at protecting larger enterprises.
Therefore, Hughes is tackling both issues by offering a package, part of Hughes Managed Cybersecurity, for an affordable, enterprise-grade solution complete with automatic wireless backup connection.
Powered by Fortinet's Next-Generation Firewall, the system provides continuous protection for business networks and data across all connected devices, including PCs, laptops, smartphones, and various Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Hughes' new cybersecurity solution offers several key features designed to address the specific needs of small businesses:
- 1. Cyber protection: a next-generation firewall with Intrusion Detection and Prevention System safeguards businesses against potential threats
- 2. Content filtering: this feature blocks malicious or potentially liable websites, enhancing both security and productivity
- 3. Higher network availability: an automatic 4G LTE wireless backup connection ensures businesses stay online during internet outages
- 4. Flexible Wi-Fi connectivity: the package provides both enterprise Wi-Fi for employees and guest Wi-Fi for customers and vendors
- 5. Real-time threat intelligence: AI-powered security services protect against known and unknown attacks, including exploits, vulnerabilities, and zero-day threats
Equally, Hughes is offering up to 25% in savings on the Hughes Managed Cybersecurity solution through Visa small business cardholders Visa SavingsEdge.
The package is designed for easy self-installation, and with access to 24/7 expert support and next-calendar day maintenance to ensure continuous service.
Too small to recover
With the costs of a breach spiralling beyond just initial recovery, the imperative for small businesses is becoming more urgent.
Cybersecurity course provider Station X revealed 60% of small enterprises go out of business six months after a cyberattack. This outcome arises mainly because small businesses spend significant amounts of money remediating the cyber-attack coupled with reputational damage and downtime.
This initiative from Hughes Network Systems, therefore, could keep many of these small businesses operating by being both affordable and comprehensive.
