The cybersecurity outlook
This strategic hire underscores Commvault's intensifying focus on extending its cybersecurity capabilities across APAC during an era of escalating ransomware threats.
According to IBM's 2023 Cost of a Data Breach report, the global average cost of a data breach in 2023 was US$4.45 million, a 15% increase over 3 years.
Headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, Commvault is a publicly-traded enterprise software company laser-focused on data protection and management. Originally formed in 1988 as an AT&T data management group, Commvault was spun off in 1996 and went public a decade later.
Commvault helps more than 100,000 organisations keep data safe and businesses resilient and moving forward, offering the only cyber resilience platform that combines data security and rapid recovery at enterprise scale across any workload, anywhere.
Commvault's offerings
Commvault's unified data platform offers an integrated suite for backup, recovery, archiving, replication, searching, and analytics across cloud and on-premises environments. Its software leverages agent technology and a centralised CommServe server to protect data through a MediaAgent processing layer.
Its flagship product is the Complete Backup and Recovery solution, complemented by offerings like HyperScale integrated appliances, Orchestrate for disaster recovery, and Activate for analytics. The company has developed advanced data management capabilities like global deduplication, SaaS data protection, and scale-out architectures.
Beyond technology, Commvault provides consulting services to guide customers through data management deployments, implementations, and monitoring. Its managed service offerings enable fully remote software operations.
Cybersecurity capabilities
As cyber threats intensify, Commvault continues bolstering its cybersecurity muscle. In 2019, it acquired software-defined storage firm Hedvig, followed by the 2022 purchase of Israeli cyber company TrapX. Most recently, Commvault acquired cloud cyber recovery specialist Appranix in April 2024.
Commvault is also launching new AI-powered solutions to combat escalating threats. Its new Commvault Cloud platform combines SaaS and software data protection into a single platform with unified visibility across data protection, security, intelligence, and recovery.
The company's upcoming Cleanroom Recovery solution, developed with Microsoft Azure, enables customers to recover a clean data backup in the cloud to accelerate recovery after an attack. According to IBM's 2022 report, it took an average of 277 days for businesses to identify and report a data breach.
Commvault is also piloting its Platinum Resilience managed service this year to help thwart cybersecurity threats and support disaster recovery, with plans for general availability in early 2024.
With over 30 years of innovation, major partnerships, and now augmented APAC leadership, Commvault is staking its claim as a leading data protection and cyber resilience authority amid the ransomware era.
